new world

we break our cycles
like breaking bones.
so harsh and painful we refrain.
but all that fear we bundle up–
we forget that, as children,
we would sally forth down tree trunks
and, on rooftops roaring, ‘see me fly and defy’
and jump with no regret.
and yet — now we find our fragile bones
more precious than a new world.
